A 65-year-old Indian-Amercan doctor, who went to Haiti to attend an IMA World Health's meeting two days before the killer earthquake, had a miraculous escape from beneath tons of rubble where she was buried for 50 hours in a collapsed Port-au-Prince hotel. A slightly-bruised but traumatized Sarla Chand came back home to Teaneck, New Jersey,on Saturday night.

The Guantanamo detention centre has a major medical facility and a large airstrip both of which could be used in the coming days, State Department spokesman P J Crowley said. The devastating quake struck at about 15 km south-west of the capital at 4.53 pm local time and was followed by three aftershocks. Several buildings, including the presidential palace and a hospital, have reportedly collapsed.
